The unlikely, relatable, coming-of-age film
Kiki’s Delivery Service is a 1989 Japanese animated film directed by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki, and produced by Studio Ghibli. The film tells the story of a young Witch named Kiki, who, at the age of thirteen, sets out to fulfil her dream of becoming an independent witch by leaving her home and venturing out into the world to start a delivery service. When thinking about what great coming-of-age films there are, I am sure Kiki’s Delivery Service is not the first to jump to your mind. And although on the surface, it may seem like a simple story about a girl and her cat, Kiki’s Delivery Service is, in fact, a coming-of-age film that explores themes of self-discovery, independence, and the challenges of growing up. There is a message in the film all of us can learn from.

One of the most striking aspects of the film is how it portrays Kiki’s journey of self-discovery. At the beginning of the film, Kiki is full of enthusiasm and confidence. She is excited about her new adventure and eager to prove herself as a witch. Myself and my social circle (and same with many others in their 20s) find ourselves in a mixed bag of experiences. Some of us have travelled the world, some of us in great careers, some of us have bought houses, some still living with our parents, some thinking of marriage and kids, and some not wanting relationships; this film is a great representation of how you should allow your life to happen at its own pace – don’t compare yourselves to others – we are all at different stages and that is not a bad thing. No big decisions should be rushed due to societal expectations, and you don’t need to want everything that society makes you think you should have. You don’t want to spend all your hard-earned money on a deposit for a house and want to use it to travel instead? Do it. Do you want to live a childless life so that you can be selfish with your money? Do it! And vice versa etc. Ultimately, do what you want to do on your time scale.
Another important theme explored in Kiki’s Delivery Service is independence. Kiki’s journey is about her transition from childhood to adulthood, and her desire to become independent is a driving force behind her decision to leave home. Throughout the film, Kiki struggles with the responsibilities that come with independence. She must manage her finances, find a place to stay, and navigate the unfamiliar streets of a new city.
